A new Spanish constructor is set to join the FIA World Rally Championship’s (WRC) top tier from 2027, as RMC Motorsport and the Real Federación Española de Automovilismo (RFEDA) confirm plans to develop a next-generation Rally1 car.
The project, named WRT Rally1 by RMC-RFEDA, was unveiled ahead of Rally Islas Canarias, Spain’s WRC round. WRT Rally1 by RMC-RFEDA becomes the second new constructor to commit to the new rules cycle, following the earlier announcement from Project Rally One.
RMC Motorsport will lead the design, build and development of the car, drawing on nearly a decade of experience with its Group N5 machinery, which has competed across domestic and international championships.
The initiative is also notable for its structure, with RFEDA becoming the first national federation affiliated with the FIA to actively support a WRC constructor entry.
New technical framework for WRC27 Rally1 cars
The new Rally1 car will comply with the WRC27 technical framework. The regulations are centred on cost control and accessibility, featuring a €345,000 budget cap and standardised elements such as a tubular safety cell, alongside key technical features including four-wheel drive, double-wishbone suspension and a sustainably fuelled 1.6-litre turbocharged engine derived from current Rally2 cars.
FIA Deputy President for Sport Malcolm Wilson described the project as “an encouraging sign” for the championship’s future, highlighting the growing confidence in the new regulatory direction.
“What makes this project particularly noteworthy is that it is backed by an FIA member club, a first for the championship, and a clear sign of the confidence federations have in the direction the WRC is taking,” Wilson said.
The Spanish entry joins an expanding 2027 field that is expected to include both independent projects and established manufacturers such as Toyota. So far, Toyota is the only current WRC manufacturer known to be developing a new WRC27 Rally1 car.
Technical details regarding WRT Rally1 Spain’s WRC27 car have not yet been released.
“This project represents the professional culmination of RMC’s journey. With the extensive experience gained from building N5 vehicles competing across several continents, we now approach the opportunity to develop the new FIA 2027 Rally1 car with great enthusiasm.
“The support of RFEDA, under the leadership of Manuel Aviñó, is key to the project’s success. We are working intensively and will soon be able to share more detailed technical information about the new car,” RMC Motorsport founder Roberto Méndez said.
